This dying labrador fulfilled his owner’s wish when he walked down the aisle on her wedding day. Such faithfulness is likened to a precious gift and is the best one she could ever have hoped for—one that will live in her heart forever.
When Kelly O’Connell was a young girl she used to work at an animal shelter when an adorable puppy was brought in. The pitch black 12-week old lab was found abandoned in a shopping cart. Although Kelly had no intention of getting a dog at the time, she could not resist this beautiful pup. “He came in, and I was like, ‘Yup. I’m taking this puppy home,’” Kelly said.
As life would have it, Kelly finally met her husband-to-be, James Garvin. They both had the same interest in helping animals and they were both veterinarians. So, they decided to marry and have a wonderful celebration with Charlie included. By this time, Charlie was at the grand old age of 15 years. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor earlier in the year. Just before the big day, he had 5 seizures, and this was heartbreaking to Kelly.
Kelly’s one wish was to have Charlie with her on her special day. The week before the wedding Charlie’s seizures stopped. Charlie was his old self again. He “seemed like a whole new dog,” O’Connell said. So it came to be that on that beautiful day, Charlie walked down that aisle for his beloved owner. He tried so hard for her. He could not make it back though. Kelly’s sister picked him up and carried him. Everyone including all the bride’s maids were struggling to hold back their tears but to no avail. “James and I just grabbed onto him, and we just kept saying, ‘You made it, buddy, you made it,’” Kelly said.
On September 9, Charlie passed away peacefully in front of the fireplace and surrounded by his loving family. “It was a phenomenal 15 years. That’s for sure,” Kelly says.
